To Wisconsin and Back

5.20.2010

The past 11 days were fun, exciting, very eventful but have left me feeling a little rough around the edges.  As my hubby has put it many times before, we are now in need of a vacation from our vacation.

In total we drove over 2000 miles, spent hundreds of dollars, slept at three different hotels, ate far to much fast food, but in return created memories that will last a life time!

Our trip started on Friday May 7th.  We got up early, well we were planning on getting up early, but when baby K sleeps longer in the morning then normal, I try not to wake her. This gave me time to finish packing and shower. Another set back was me being me and I did not want to leave the house until it was perfectly clean.  I wanted to vacuum upstairs, downstairs, I had to make sure the dishes were all clean and put away, laundry started from the night before folded and put away-I know it sounds crazy but that's just how I'm wired.  I like to come home to a clean house.

Once we finally got on the road, we drove 5.5 hours to my Aunt G's in WV. Baby K did so good sitting in her seat, but I think by the last hour she was ready to be finished and I can't blame her I felt the same way.

Baby K got to meet her Great Aunt and cousin that night.  This was exciting.  She played shy at first but warmed up nicely by supper time.  One of my favorite meals of the trip-BBQ burgers, BBQ pineapple and sweet potato fries.  I think if baby K had more teeth she would of loved to try out a burger.  Next summer perhaps.

May 8th we had another loong day of traveling.  This time the weather was not so nice, it was rainy, chilly, and very windy.  Not good zoo weather. So instead of stopping by the Toledo Ohio zoo we drove the extra hour to our hotel in South Bend Indiana.  We arrived at the hotel around 4-5 o'clock and had another relaxing night. we ordered pizza, and took a little trip to check out a "Super Target" something my hubby and I had not seen before.

May 9th's Mothers Day. Our plan was to get up at a descent time in order to finish our trip and arrive at his Grandma's in WI by 3-4 o'clock.  Our planes changed again, greatly!  We did manage to get back on the road before 10, but once we got closer to Chicago, we gained an hour. We completely forgot about this, but it didn't effect us to much as the place we were headed opened up at 9 so we arrived on time. No not on time to his Grandmas, but on time to beat the lines at the Chicago Aquarium.
We spent the majority of the day walking around taking in all the fish, turtles, sharks, dolphins, beluga whales, and of course the penguins!  Not sure how much baby K will remember, but it was fun for hubby and I. I love the water!

We left the aquarium around 3 with all intentions of getting to his Grandma's in the next 3 hours.  This did not happen.  Chicago traffic added on another hour/hour and a half to our trip. Not to mention baby K started screaming in the middle of us being stopped in traffic and wouldn't let up. I almost took her out of her seat despite being on the road. She was crying so hard she'd start chocking.  It was a very loong hour.  Needless to say. Worn out from the Aquarium, the traffic being backed up, having to make some more stops-we were not going to be arriving till after 9:30pm.  So we didn't. We stopped 2 hours shy of his Grandma's and found a hotel. We needed to be finished for the day sooner then 9:30 PM.

We did finally arrive at the hubby's Grandma's Monday afternoonish. The next 5 days were spent helping hubby's Grandma with spring cleaning around her farm house, visiting, and letting baby K and Great Grandma get to know each other.  We also got to meet and visit with hubby's Aunt, Uncle and second cousin. No not second as in down the family tree..but second as in he now has two cousins in total. This little guy is so adorable..beautiful big blue eyes! A week went by and in honor of hubby's Grandma birthday we had oatmeal and ice cream for breakfast on Friday morning, dinner with the family Saturday night- Hubby's Grandma made ebelskiver-yummy stuff!!

May 16th Early Sunday morning we were headed back home.  Our drive home was more tame then our drive out.  Picked up some aged 9 years sharp cheddar for my Aunt G right from with in Wisconsin.  Stayed at a hotel in Toledo Ohio the first night.  Then drove to my Aunt G's on Monday morning. Oh did I mention that some where in Toledo they have a Timmies. :)  Had to stop and get an ice cap of course! Haven't had one of those in years.   We did think of hitting the Pittsburgh zoo on the way home, but again the weather was rainy, wet and to chilly.

We had another nice visit with Aunt G, and Uncle Tim got to meet baby K this time around.  Baby K met a whole lot of new people in two weeks.

Tuesday morning we got back on the road for the last 5.5 hours of driving.  We made one stop to walk around Coopers Rock in WV. Loved the few. Then drove straight home from there.

  1. I can see how you would need a vacation after your vacation. We often feel the same way.
I love the car pic, with Hubby and K in the side mirror.
